HEART SUTRA
Hyunmee Kim

‘HEART SUTRA’ is a typography book written with scripture that explains the core beliefs of Buddhism. Prajna Paramita Hrdaya Sutra was translated from Sanskrit to Chinese during the Tang dynasty by the Chinese Buddhist monk, Tripitaka Master Hsuan Tsang. She would recite the 260 Chinese characters of the Sutra without fully grasping their meaning, because she was only taught to phonate the words of the prayer rather than the meaning of each character. In order to get closer to the contents of the prayer, the book is designed with a Korean translation and explanation of key concepts, along with an English translation to see how it is expressed in another language. It is a book that interweaves three writing systems around the prayer, which has been recited for more than 2,000 years to gain enlightenment. ‘HEART SUTRA’, which was awarded the Grand title by the Korean Society of Typography, is produced as the third edition in a limited quantity of 60 books containing Hyunmee Kim's autograph.
